Inevitable Change – Shattering Our Attachment to ‘Sameness’

inevitable change - beautiful butterfly

As a species, humanity does not encourage and embrace change easily. Most people want to change and remain the same! Call it ‘selective change’ on our terms. But, of course, life does not work this way.  As I have often said; you cannot change and remain the same.

It is generally thought that we respond or react to life. Certainly we dominate our environment, but life still presses our buttons. What is seldom realised, however, is that life also responds and reacts to us. We, and Life, are an intrinsic and intertwined expression and exploration of consciousness. Consciousness draws to the Self physical form through which to express, but the expression is always consciousness. It is our conscious expression that determines both our relationship with life and nature, and life and nature’s relationships with us.

Today we live in a world where nature seems to be getting ever more violent, ever more unpredictable. We constantly get reports of people losing their lives and homes to drought, deluge, earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes. We blame ourselves for much of this, believing that we must be more careful with the environment, and reduce our carbon imprint.

Good. I hope we do! But consider…  Nothing in nature remains static.

About fifteen thousand years ago all of Europe was under maybe fifty metres of snow and ice. Did we cause this? Then, as the ice age receded, the oceans of the world rose by about a hundred metres. Did we cause this? The forests of Europe appeared only about seven thousand years ago; change, change, change.

How does all this change affect humanity? It compels us to also change and grow. It shatters our attachment to ‘sameness’.

Now, we are being told in Australia that our east coast is in danger of flood in the next few decades. So people will have to move. People will have to realise that there is more to life than expensive coastal real estate. As the seas rise, the same thing is happening in Europe. In the Netherlands, which is a  little above and much below sea-level, many people are getting anxious. Expensive real estate is under threat, and so too, potentially, are human lives.

These cycles are nothing new. So what is it all this saying? Climatic and environmental change is endemic to our planet, and all nature is a process of continual change. But we resist. We do not like change unless it is on our terms. We like to modify, not change. We like to dominate and control, not participate and experience.

In order for humanity to thrive into our next stage of evolution, we need to be flexible; we need to let go of our attachments to our house, to our high income jobs, and to all our securities. None of this is easy, not for any of us. But we need to be open to change, to accept and embrace it. We need to let go of all that change takes from us and focus on what it helps us create. We need to remember that we are Beings of Love; that we actually are Love made manifest in human form. We need to realise that experience and expansion and growth are our true purpose in life, and  learn that Love also must expand and grow.

It is okay to move to a safer location. It is good to let go of all that anchors and chains us to ‘sameness’. Change is a messenger; it says “let go!” Being flexible and open, moving home and letting go, living beyond the boundaries of fear – this is the meaning behind change. It is sad that we only seem to find the Power of Love and transformation in times of ‘crisis’ and change.

We need to change that!
