How Wealth Can Reduce Compassion
May 13th
By Daisy Grewal - scientificamerican.com
As riches grow, empathy for others seems to decline.
Who is more likely to lie, cheat, and steal—the poor person or the rich one? It’s temping to think that the wealthier you are, the more likely you are to act fairly. After all, if you already have enough for yourself, it’s easier to think about what others may need. But research suggests the opposite is true: as people climb the social ladder, their compassionate feelings towards other people decline.
Berkeley psychologists Paul Piff and Dacher Keltner ran several studies looking at whether social class (as measured by wealth, occupational prestige, and education) influences how much we care about the feelings of others. In one study, Piff and his colleagues discreetly observed the behavior of drivers at a busy four-way intersection. They found that luxury car drivers were more likely to cut off other motorists instead of waiting for their turn at the intersection. This was true for both men and women upper-class drivers, regardless of the time of day or the amount of traffic at the intersection. In a different study they found that luxury car drivers were also more likely to speed past a pedestrian trying to use a crosswalk, even after making eye contact with the pedestrian.

What are Antioxidants and Why Should the Prepper Care?

Buddha (c. 563 BC to 483 BC) is credited with saying:
“To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”
Now it seems to me that if the world were to drastically change in a TEOTWAWKI situation, having a strong and clear mind would be paramount to survival. And yet, as we plan for such an event, how much of our effort is spent on the matter of good health in the here and now? Not as much as we could and should I say.
The reasons are simple. It is just easy to continue to do things the way we always have. Some chips with our burger, a nice piece of pie for desert, and oh yeah, what about the can of soda to wash it down?
I have always been interested in diet and nutrition, most likely because I was an overweight child and have struggled to maintain trim my entire life. For the most part I have won the battle but now I also face the dreaded prospect of aging, and am acutely aware that what goes in can materially affect both how I look and how I feel as I get older.

Eight Hard to Kill House Plants
May 12th
By Marissa Ross - care2.com
Ah, yes, spring. Makes me want to go outside and frolic in some flowers and enjoy some sunshine. You know, all the things our daydreams are made of! But more so than not, I am stuck inside my apartment staring at a computer screen or cleaning up after my kid (‘kid’, ‘dog’- same thing in this house!).
I am probably the least domestic person anyone I know knows. Famous for only eating frozen veggie corn dogs or blocks of cheese when left to my own devices, it’s also not uncommon to hear about me shrinking my boyfriend’s shirts or killing off my roommate’s hydrangeas. But this Spring, I decided it was high time I get some foliage to brighten up my space! So, what does the girl that can barely remember to turn in her Netflix plant in her house?
Here are some low maintenance and highly rewarding houseplants to consider:

Study on Monsanto Corn Suggests GMO Trees could Devastate Forest Ecosystems
May 11th
“Some trees are being genetically engineered to contain the Bt toxin,” notes Anne Peterman of Stop GE Trees. “This could be a tremendous threat to forest ecosystem soils, in which beneficial fungi are a key component of the forest ecosystem.”
The feds have allowed seven southeastern states to plant GM forests. See Alien Forest, Alien Ocean, Alien Sky; and watch the award-winning documentary, “A Silent Forest: The Growing Threat, Genetically Engineered Trees” (2005, 46 mins) which details the appalling effects allowed by the Monsanto-owned federal government. (You can buy the full length film at Amazon.)

Lone Indian Man Plants 1,360 Acre Forest
May 10th
10th May 2012
By Stephen Messenger - treehugger.com
A little over 30 years ago, a teenager named Jadav “Molai” Payeng began burying seeds along a barren sandbar near his birthplace in northern India’s Assam region to grow a refuge for wildlife. Not long after, he decided to dedicate his life to this endeavor, so he moved to the site where he could work full-time creating a lush new forest ecosystem. Incredibly, the spot today hosts a sprawling 1,360 acre of jungle that Payeng planted single-handedly.
The Times of India recently caught up with Payeng in his remote forest lodge to learn more about how he came to leave such an indelible mark on the landscape:
It all started way back in 1979 when floods washed a large number of snakes ashore on the sandbar. One day, after the waters had receded, Payeng , only 16 then, found the place dotted with the dead reptiles. That was the turning point of his life.

Natural Remedies for Food Poisoning
May 10th
Contributing Writers for Wake Up World
Hardly anyone ever expects to get food poisoning, since the food or drink itself may look, smell and taste perfectly fine at the time. It’s only a few hours or days after ingesting the contaminated item that the worst of the symptoms may appear. These can include vomiting, severe headache, diarrhea, fatigue, digestion distress, etc. It is vitally important to treat symptoms of food poisoning as soon as they appear.
Our first instinct might be to run to the doctor to get antibiotics for a ‘quick fix’, but antibiotics can wipe out all of the beneficial bacteria in our system. This bacterium is necessary to help balance the “bad” bacteria that we have consumed. We can also develop immunity to antibiotics, so it is only a short lived remedy at best. Are there natural, less harsh remedies we can make and use at home?

Are Cancer Stem Cells the Key to Discovering a Cure?
May 10th
By Sayer Ji - Wake Up World
From the perspective of conventional cancer treatment a diagnosis of multi-drug resistant cancer is equivalent to a death sentence. By the time such a diagnosis occurs, the patient’s body has been irreversibly damaged by chemotherapy and radiation, and an even more aggressive cancer has emerged to take the place of the original one.
Tragically, these treatments do not simply fail, but make the cancers more malignant. This fact is effectively concealed by the name multidrug resistant cancer which makes it seem as if the cancer was so exceptionally resistant and malignant that the normally effective drugs used to treat it just couldn’t do the job.
But wouldn’t it be more accurate to call this multi-drug failed cancer, putting the responsibility back on the medical establishment, as it should be, in recognition of the impotence, or worse, cancer-promoting nature of its treatment choices?

Dare to be Free. Free to be Me. How Much is Your Life Shaped by What you ‘Should’ do?
May 9th

How much does life’s conditioning, expectation, sense of responsibility and obligation subtlely control what you end up doing? For most, even when we’re awake, it’s a good deal. I remember guiding a firewalk once and saying to the group, dare to feel it, dare to be you, dare to express yourself. At which point, one lady stripped off all her clothes and walked naked across the fire. For the whole group, it was a breath-taking, inspirational expression of total freedom…
There’s a YOU inside all of this
There is a YOU inside all of this. There is a YOU that is totally free. At a soul level, we are not governed by taboos of what we should and shouldn’t be. Laws, regulations, contracts and popular opinion, are all constructs of thought forms solidified like flowing water long since frozen.

Are You Unintentionally Poisoning Your Food?
May 9th
Contributing Writer for Wake Up World
While you and your family may be eating high quality organic foods on a routine basis, a simple food preparation mistake may actually be poisoning the food you eat. What’s more, you may even be told it is safe by some medical and government leaders who are completely unaware of the research on this toxic substance.
Are You Unintentionally Poisoning Your Food with Sodium Fluoride?
The toxic substance I am speaking of is sodium fluoride, added to citizens’ water supplies worldwide and used in food preparation in many homes. Even if you’re eating organic soup, for example, the fluoridated water being used to heat and cook the soup can have serious consequences when it comes to the health of you and your family — particularly young ones.

Wake Up World Turns 1
May 8th
It’s hard to believe that 4th May 2012 marked the 1 year anniversary of Wake Up World. As I think back over the last 12 months and the events leading up to the birth of WuW, the emotions are mixed; I feel amazed that we have reached as many people as we have so far. I feel blessed by the support and encouragement we have received. I feel sad that a site like Wake Up World even needs to exist in the first place. I feel validated knowing there are so many of you out there who feel the way I do and care enough to do something about it. And I feel excited that our world really IS waking up….. one soul at a time.
And I’m so proud to be a part of that awakening for so many readers. Since its inception, the WuW community has grown to include nearly 40,000 Facebook followers, our articles have been viewed over 4.8 million times, and our Alexia ranking peaked in the top 5000 sites in the world! Amazingly the numbers just keep growing.
But we don’t do it on our own.
I’d like to acknowledge the contribution of the writers and technical advisors from around the world who donate their time and talents to support our cause. Without them your screen would be blank.
