Researchers Close to Matrix-Style Learning

Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

As every week passes, the world becomes more like a science fiction film. Some of these developments are nothing short of disturbing, especially for people like me who are concerned with just how this technology will be used.

Yet there is also a bright side to these emerging technologies. Not all of these developments are negative and many could actually improve the lives of many people across the world and perhaps better all of humanity.

Rupert Murdoch Pushing to Restrict the Internet

17th December 2011

Today the United States House of Representatives Judiciary Committee deliberated over the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA for short.

As I have previously outlined, this legislation, like the sister legislation in the Senate known as the PROTECT IP Act, or PIPA, is incredibly dangerous.

This is being pushed under the auspices of combating internet privacy and protecting the intellectual property of content creators the world over, it is actually quite dangerous and has led many internet pioneers to speak out against it.

There are powerful lobbies pushing on both sides of this debate, with roughly 350 or more large corporations, along with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation media empire, in favor of the bill and internet giants like Google, Yahoo! and AOL opposing it.

In a Surprising Move Time Magazine Names the Person of the Year “The Protester”

16th December 2011

Contributing Writer – Wake Up World

Traditionally, the person of the year is an actual person, a single individual who is noteworthy for one reason or another. This individual’s face is then printed on countless copies of the magazine across the world, but this year is quite different.

Time’s choice this year couldn’t be a further departure from their history, especially given that last year’s person of the year was Mark Zuckerberg, the man behind the now wildly popular and controversial Facebook.

Instead of honoring a politician, businessperson, or other single individual, Time took a great leap in giving the award to “the protester.”

This year has been marked by significant upheaval and popular protest throughout the world, especially in the Middle East as we saw with the now famous “Arab Spring” revolts across several nations.

We have also witnessed the “Occupy” movement rise to prominence, starting in New York City and spreading throughout the United States and then the world.

Leaked Email Shows ‘Occupy’ Movement has Banksters Shaking in their Boots

After being repeatedly targeted for crackdowns, harassment, and outright police brutality, the Occupy Wall Street movement that has been sweeping the United States and the world is utilizing a new tactic.

Instead of waving placards and chanting, which the criminals in the financial industry seem to be able to easily brush off, the Occupiers are now moving to “Occupy Our Homes.”

Occupy Our Homes intends to put homeless families and others who were foreclosed on back into homes which would otherwise be sitting vacant and collecting dust.

Global Pressure Increases On Former U.S. President George W. Bush

6th December 2011

By Madison Ruppert

As I have previously reported for Wake Up World, both former President of the United States George W. Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair have been found guilty by a war crimes tribunal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

While this victory was mostly a symbolic one, it is not the only place in which people are pushing back against the war criminals that have operated with impunity for far too long.

The world’s outrage with the activities of the former President of the United States are surfacing across the globe, as seen in February of this year when Bush was actually forced to cancel a trip to Geneva, Switzerland.

After Amnesty International gave Swiss federal prosecutors an in-depth legal and factual analysis of Bush’s criminal culpability for his role in acts of torture he allegedly authorized, Amnesty International concluded that the Swiss government had enough information to open a criminal investigation.

Symbolic Victory: Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal Finds Bush and Blair Guilty

28th November 2011

Recently, a War Crimes Tribunal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, found former President of the United States George W. Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair guilty of war crimes for their involvement in the Iraq war.

The panel was convened as part of an initiative by former Malaysian Premier Mahathir Mohamad, who resigned in 2003 after 22 years in power.

Mohamad has been a consistently vitriolic critic of the Iraq war and originally unveiled his plans for the tribunal in 2007.

In the past Mohamad has called Bush and Blair “child killers” and “war criminals,” and the tribunal’s four-day hearing backed up his statements.

The Tribunal was composed of five separate panels which unanimously found both Bush and Blair guilty of “crimes against the peace.” Continue Reading – Symbolic Victory: Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal Finds Bush and Blair Guilty

Boycott These Companies & Help Save The Internet

SOPA would put completely legitimate sites, like End the Lie and countless other alternative news outlets at risk of being shut down, along with literally any site that freely allows users to post content. That includes YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, Blogger, Craigslist, Dropbox and literally any website or service that allows users to upload content.

The United States Attorney General can not only seek court orders against “foreign infringing sites,” meaning any website with a non-U.S. domain name, but can also demand that internet service providers (ISPs) would have to cut off access to the site by not resolving domain name requests.

Furthermore, if served with one of the Attorney General’s court orders, search engines would have to remove any links to the site, payment networks would have to stop all payments to the site from U.S. customers and advertising networks would be forced to stop serving advertisements about the website or for the website.

But wait, it gets even worse.

SOPA would require that within five days of receiving an allegation by a copyright holder, payment services and advertising networks would have to cut off all business with the site either U.S. based or foreign.

All the copyright holder has to do is allege that the site is “dedicated to the theft of property,” and if the payment provider and advertising networks don’t cease business within five days, the copyright holder can file a private lawsuit against the site compelling the payment service and others to cut off relations.

Furthermore, The Atlantic reports that the definition of “dedicated” in this bill “has little relation to common usage,” and in addressing the bill they characterize it as “dangerous.”

As experts in the technical, operational, academic and research communities who are the leading domain name system (DNS) designers, operators, and researchers who have also published numerous peer-reviewed academic studies regarding the architecture and security of the DNS have pointed out (PDF), this will create major cybersecurity and other technical concerns that did not exist previously.

The above-linked technical whitepaper regarding the PROTECT IP Act also quite interestingly points out that the DNS filters could be easily circumvented, essentially making one of the biggest parts of the bill null and void

The ‘Banxodus’ Has Begun

8th November 2011

By Madison RuppertEnd The Lie

It’s fantastic to be able to report good news, and we don’t get to do it nearly often enough these days. There is some very good news emerging: more individuals joined credit unions since September 29th than in all of 2010 and the number is only going to grow. This clearly shows a push on behalf of the average American against the largest financial institutions that utilize their close relationships in order to steal every penny possible from the American people to the detriment of our economy and future.

According to a survey of credit unions across the United States by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) since September 29th at least 650,000 people have joined credit unions. Now compare that number to 600,000 new members credit unions received throughout the entire year of 2010.

If nothing else, the Occupy Wall Street movement has clearly impacted the move towards more equitable and legitimate banking practices, and even the corporate-controlled mainstream news organization CNN is being forced to cover it.

If the entire movement ended tomorrow, which it will not, we could at least chalk this up as a major victory against those who use their inordinate power in the financial industry to commit outright crimes and rob the American people blind.
