Genetically Modified Crops: The Trouble Is In The Soil

By Vanessa Caldarelli

One of the most detrimental issues about GM agriculture is the effect it has on our environment, specifically our soil and water. The findings regarding GM in the media, science, and FDA reports are almost solely focused on the ways in which GM affects human health. Whether what causes this negligence is because of deeply ingrained anthropocentrism in our society, or genuine ignorance of the institutions that inform us, the fact is that GM agriculture has extremely damaging affects on the health of this earth.

First, it is important to discuss the arguments for and against GM food production. The field is split in two: one side being the supporters of GM agriculture, the other being the adversaries. Each side has arguments to support their positions backed by scientific data and valid documentation. Continue Reading – Genetically Modified Crops: The Trouble Is In The Soil

Scientific Consensus Statement Reveals Monsanto’s Roundup Herbicide a Major Health Threat

By Sayer Ji

A newly published scientific consensus statement on Roundup herbicide reveals exposure to this ubiquitous toxicant is increasing and valid research proving it safe is still nowhere to be found.

A powerful new review on the toxicity of glyphosate signals a growing consensus among non-industry-sponsored scientists that the relatively unmonitored and unregulated exposure to this ubiquitous toxicant can no longer be promoted as a justifiable risk. The review is open access and can be downloaded as a PDF and/or read in its entirety here.

The newly released consensus statement published in the journal Environmental Health and titled, “Concerns over use of glyphosate-based herbicides and risks associated with exposures: a consensus statement,” identified the broad spectrum herbicide glyphosate (common trade name “Roundup”) as major threat to human and environmental health.

Getting Away with Ecocide — Chemical Reform Bill Could Grant Monsanto Legal Immunity for PCB Pollution

5th March 2016

Facing a surge in lawsuits across the United States, chemical giant Monsanto has been given a gift of sorts from the government — one that could let the corporation off the hook for its role in decades of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) pollution, effectively saving the company millions of dollars in settlements.

Pay no mind to research that demonstrates PCBs are exceptionally toxic to humans, wildlife and the environment. Also turn a blind eye to the fact that Monsanto knew for decades the chemical was extremely poisonous. And ignore that the corporation not only continued to manufacture the chemical after recognizing its toxicity, but decided it was a good idea to dump tonnes of raw PCBs into a creek adjacent to the chemical plant, essentially poisoning an entire community over the course of 40 years. For the grand finale, lets add a provision into a chemical reform bill, which protects Monsanto from lawsuits concerning said PCB contamination.

Monsanto Charged With Crimes Against Nature and Humanity, Set to Stand Trial in 2016

By Carolanne Wright

People are fed-up. And angry. We simply no longer accept that corporations have the right to ride roughshod over the environment or destroy the health of its inhabitants. We refuse to remain silent when faced with companies who contribute to poisoned rivers, people and wildlife — where the only concern is for the mighty dollar. No longer will we stand by and watch as beauty and the balance of nature is laid to waste.

Monsanto, in particular, is known as one of the most destructive corporations of all times. In response to the ongoing damage caused by the company, a coalition of food, farming and environmental justice groups — including the Organic Consumers Association (OCA), International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM), Navdanya, Regeneration International (RI) and Millions Against Monsanto, among others — have taken matters into their own hands. During the COP21 event in Paris, the alliance announced that Monsanto will be put on trial in The Hague, Netherlands for “crimes against nature and humanity” come autumn 2016.

Public Lands Slated for Deforestation and Monsanto Herbicide Spray Ignites Community Outcry

By Carolanne Wright

In a move that defies logic by authorities in the field, an area in Northern California, United States, has received federal funding to implement an “ environmentally catastrophic plan to eradicate Eucalyptus, Monterey Pine, and Acacia forests on the public lands and parks of the East Bay.” Beginning in August 2015, up to 400,000 trees will be clear-cut in the park district and the remaining stumps sprayed with toxic herbicides by Dow and Monsanto. The ultimate goal is to eliminate forests and transform the spaces into “grassland with islands of shrubs” in an attempt to reduce fire hazard. However, those who have experience with wildfire mitigation have come forward denouncing the plan, stating that fire risk will dramatically increase if officials continue down this destructive path.

“Agrochemical giant Monsanto knowingly contaminated Oakland’s storm water and the San Francisco Bay with a highly toxic chemical for decades, a new lawsuit filed by the California city claims. Oakland wants the company to pay for the environmental cleanup.” [source]

Municipalities in the U.S. are fed-up with Monsanto’s corrupt tactics — and they’re hitting the corporation where it hurts: their pocketbook. Oakland California, the latest city to sue the biotech colossus, has filed a lawsuit seeking retribution for damages caused by harmful polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination.

In a press release by the city last Tuesday, The State Water Resources Control Board found that PCBs present in Oakland’s storm water is a threat to the entire San Fransisco Bay’s ecosystem.

The Beginning of the End for Monsanto? Communities Fight Back Against Chemical Contamination

By Carolanne Wright

One of the most hated corporations on the planet, Monsanto is on the hot seat once again. This time, the city of San Jose in the United States is suing the biotech giant over waterway chemical pollution. According to the lawsuit, Monsanto knew for decades polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic to the environment and people — yet continued to manufacture and sell the chemicals regardless.

San Jose isn’t the only American city to hold Monsanto accountable for its corrupt ways — Spokane, Washington has recently filed a similar lawsuit. Part of an up and coming trend seen across the United States, communities are standing up to the corporation and making their voices heard.

Evidence Mounts on Roundup’s Link to Liver and Kidney Damage

By Dr. Edward Group

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

One of the world’s most popular herbicide–Roundup–is making its way back into the headlines in regards to its health and environmental effects. Monsanto, the producer of Roundup (glyphosate), claims this herbicide is safe; however, study after study from independent researchers is showing the exact opposite.

A new research study is showing that small amounts of exposure – up to thousands of times lower than permitted in drinking water in the U.S. – can produce unfavorable and concerning effects in the liver and kidneys. Could this study be the turning point for finally phasing out Roundup in agriculture? Or will it simply be ignored and human health continue to suffer?

Climate Engineering, El Niño and the “Scheduled Weather” for the Coming Winter in The US

By Dane Wigington

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

Weather “forecasters” are now trumpeting the arrival of a “Godzilla” El Niño event, but somehow they seem to already know that there will be no relief for the epic California drought.

How can such a prediction be made so early on? Because of ongoing climate engineering.

Ocean temperatures in the Eastern Pacific are at record shattering high levels (pictured top), so why wouldn’t this translate into more rain for the now empty reservoirs in Northern California? Since when does El Niño not bring more rain to the West??

The El Niño pattern has been trying to form since 2007 but has been repeatedly suppressed by what meteorologists have coined as “the ridiculously resilient ridge” of constant high pressure over the US west coast. Was this rain-starving scenario the result of climate engineers and their aggressive effort to suppress El Niño formation in a destructive attempt to hold the lid on soaring global temperatures? Yes.

Stop GMO Corn in Mexico… Again! – Mexican Court Overturns Biotech GMO Ban

2nd September 2015

If you’ve been to Mexico, you know how incredible the food and culture are. I grew up part-time in Mexico and have returned many times since, for the beauty of the land, the people, the culture and the food. Much of this food culture revolves around corn, or maize, as it is technically called. But corn does more than feed people. It’s part and parcel of Mexico’s way of life.

Mexico is the cradle, the birthplace, of maize. Thousands of varieties have been cultivated over thousands of years by indigenous and traditional Mexicans. Many of these varieties are specifically adapted to thrive in Mexico’s varied landscapes — far more effectively than the one or two genetically modified varieties that stand to wipe out this millennia-long heritage.

However, after years of staving off the proliferation of GMO corn in Mexico, we’ve just received news of a devastating blow to the protection of everything beautiful connected with Mexico and this culinary legacy. After intense lobbying by biotech companies of Monsanto, Dow, and Dupont, Mexico’s twelfth District Court just overturned a 2013 ruling which, until now, has prevented the chemicals giants from planting GMO maize in Mexico.

Monsanto’s “Roundup Ready” 1,000 Times More Toxic Than Glyphosate Alone

4th August 2015

“Glyphosate is definitely genotoxic. There is no doubt in my mind.” ~ Professor Christopher Portier, World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)

During a mid-July scientific briefing in London organized by the Soil Association, Professor Christopher Portier reaffirmed the findings of the World Health Organization (WHO); glyphosate is a probable carcinogen that also damages DNA. When both these factors are found within a single chemical, regulators believe there is no safe level of exposure.

Even more disturbing is the data presented by Dr. Robin Mesnage of the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Kings College in London, which shows that “Roundup is 1,000 times more toxic than glyphosate alone.” He said, “Glyphosate is everywhere throughout our food chain – in our food and water. The lack of data on toxicity of glyphosate is not proof of safety and these herbicides cannot be considered safe without proper testing. We know Roundup, the commercial name of glyphosate-based herbicides, contains many other chemicals, which when mixed together are 1,000 times more toxic than glyphosate on its own,” as reported by GMWatch.

The DARK Act: Monsanto’s Dream Come True, a Waking Nightmare for Clean Food and the Environment

28th July 2015

Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

In a startling victory for Monsanto, the United States House of Representatives, against enormous public and industry outcry, passed H.R. 1599 — widely known as the “Deny Americans the Right to Know Act” or “The Dark Act.” This decision comes despite the opposition of over 300 farmer, environmental and consumer groups who opposed the bill in a letter to Congress, not to mention disapproval from the National Farmers Union, America’s second largest farming organization. Don’t also forget that 93% of respondents in a 2013 New York Times poll were also supportive of mandatory labeling for genetically engineered food.

And yet, House members decided to push through the “mother of all Monsanto protection acts,” which will invalidate the existing mandatory GMO labeling laws in any state — like the one in Vermont — and preempt any future state and federal GMO bans and labeling laws.

Observes Ronnie Cummins, International Director of the Organic Consumers Association, our so-called representatives have “voted against truth and transparency, against science, against the more than century-old right of states to legislate on matters relating to food safety and labeling. They voted against the 90-percent of Americans who are in favor of mandatory labeling of GMOs. They voted against the producers of non-GMO foods. They voted against you.”
