Scientists Discover That Bacteria Have a Collective Memory

17th April 2016

Collective motion can be observed in biological systems over a wide range of length scales, from large animals to fish to bacteria, because collective systems always work better for adaptation than those which are singular.

Individual bacterial cells have short memories. But groups of bacteria can develop a collective memory that can increase their tolerance to stress. This has been demonstrated experimentally for the first time in a study by Eawag and ETH Zurich scientists published in PNAS.

A central question in the study of biological collective motion is how the traits of individuals give rise to the emergent behavior at population level. This question is relevant to the dynamics of general self-propelled particle systems, biological self-organization, and active fluids. Bacteria provide a tractable system to address this question, because bacteria are simple and their behavior is relatively easy to control.

Navigating The Information War with Emotional Intelligence

16th April 2016

By Bernhard Guenther

Many of us do our best to speak out about the atrocities, injustices, oppressions, environmental issues, and corruption in our world. That is certainly needed, and shouldn’t be ignored. However, I’ve also seen more and more that many “truth seekers” and activists tend to focus only on these issues and get stuck on “fighting the system” on a 3D level. Many renegades who bring the darkness to light in our world – researchers and people in the alternative media realm – also fight each other over relatively minor points of disagreement, which quickly devolve and shift into personal attacks. Be it on social media, message boards, or YouTube comments, with people hiding behind their screens, they behave in ways they would probably never do when interacting in person. Such is the price of living in the Internet Age.

However, if we recognize that shadow aspect in ourselves, without rationalizing it away by finding fault in others – and thus, take accountability for the way we communicate at all times – we can show more humility and have more compassion for others and ourselves, and focus on the information itself so that we can get at the truth together.

Genetically Modified Crops: The Trouble Is In The Soil

15th April 2016

By Vanessa Caldarelli

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

One of the most detrimental issues about GM agriculture is the effect it has on our environment, specifically our soil and water. The findings regarding GM in the media, science, and FDA reports are almost solely focused on the ways in which GM affects human health. Whether what causes this negligence is because of deeply ingrained anthropocentrism in our society, or genuine ignorance of the institutions that inform us, the fact is that GM agriculture has extremely damaging affects on the health of this earth.

First, it is important to discuss the arguments for and against GM food production. The field is split in two: one side being the supporters of GM agriculture, the other being the adversaries. Each side has arguments to support their positions backed by scientific data and valid documentation. Continue Reading – Genetically Modified Crops: The Trouble Is In The Soil

Why It’s OK to NOT Have It All Figured Out

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveller is unaware” — Martin Buber

Throughout much of my 28 years on this planet, life has always seemed like a great mystery to me. I’ve never been the type of person who has it all figured out. I was never the child who grew up with dreams of being a vet or a doctor, in fact I never really had a goal that excited me for longer than a few weeks. I was never the little girl who grew up imagining my perfect wedding day, how many children I would have, or even what my life would be like. That just wasn’t me!

That’s not to say I wasn’t a dreamer, but my fantasies were more whimsical than realistic. Once I left high school the pressure of making it in the ‘real world’ loomed over me like a rain cloud ready to flood my life if I didn’t find some sort of direction. As a result, I dabbled in lacklustre courses and unfulfilling jobs, basically anything that resembled a shred of ambition. I fumbled my way along, riding the ups and downs of life with little strategy or purpose in mind. Life to me felt like an enigma that I was somehow incapable of ever solving. Continue Reading – Why It’s OK to NOT Have It All Figured Out

Being Enough

14th April 2016

By Jack Adam Weber

Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

The feeling that we are not enough is often a throwback to childhood. No matter how much we tell ourselves that we are enough, it is not going change much how we feel about ourselves as adults. The cure to this bedeviling feeling is to go back and do the healing work from childhood, for the love we did not get. This was the unconditional acceptance of our beingness into the world nourished by the grounded forces of caring, respect, and honor that allowed to us to feel whole, and enough.

As adults, we carry our childhood inside us. Yet, many confuse insufficient feelings from childhood with the adult experience of being enough, as if to be enough as an adult is not to have to show up for anything and just be, or at least not have to show up more than we did as children. As adults, we are rewarded and recognized more for what we contribute to others and to the world, for our responsibility and generosity to the whole. In other words, as adults the bulk of our worth and enoughness is not just for being alive, but for what we contribute to others, for giving.

You Know the Benefits of Meditation – But What Are the Pitfalls?

14th April 2016

By Dr. Itai Ivtzan

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

A few years ago, after I discussed the great benefits of meditation in one of my workshops, a student said to me: “Well, what you’re actually saying here is that meditation is great, and does not have any dangers or side effects.”

That comment made me realise how easy it is to highlight the bright side of meditation while disregarding its potential dark side. Psychological research, as well as our personal experience, has shown how valuable meditation is: it reduces our stress, deepens our meaning in life, eases our pain, and makes it easier for us to sleep. The Amazingly Simple and Cost-Effective Way to End Homelessness — for Good

During a balmy 60ºF December morning, Rene Zepeda is driving a Volunteers of America minivan through Salt Lake City, Utah, looking for the homeless who may be camping by the railroad tracks or over by the river, sometimes in the foothills. Cold weather is on its way, so the van is packed with sleeping bags, thermal clothing, coats, sock, boots, hats, protein bars, nutrition drinks and canned goods. According to Rene, once the day is finished, everything will be gone. “I want to get them into homes,” he says. “I tell them, ‘I’m working for you. I want to get you out of the homeless situation.’”

Rene works for a program called Housing First. It has decreased the number of homeless by an extraordinary 72% — mainly by providing permanent free housing. Critics bemoan the expense, but once the numbers were thoroughly crunched, it was discovered the program actually costs the state far less than if people were left on the street. Moreover, in a nation where a large proportion of the homeless population are military veterans, adopting such a program is not only a social or financial imperative but a moral one.

Earth: This Is Our Realm

13th April 2016

By Zen Gardner

Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

Contrary to what we’re being told, that we’re a curse on this planet, we’re supposed to be here. This is our current and very real realm of existence, here on this planet. Our home. This is an important point to remember.

Many feel helpless, especially in times of confusion and spiritual distress, but they needn’t be. This is rightfully our world to peacefully dwell in, no matter what physical, spiritual or dimensional energies assail us. This is something to take great comfort in, but it does require awareness and vigilance.

You’re Not a Mind Reader – Stop Worrying What Other People Think of You

Can you read minds?

Have you ever walked into a room and worried what people thought of you? I suspect most of us will, at some time or other in our lives, have worried what other people think of us.

Now let me ask the question a different way: Do you think that you are that important that when you walk in a room people only focus on you? It’s essentially the same question. And the craziest thing of all is that you can’t read minds, so you have no way of knowing what someone thinks of you!

The Divide of the Uninformed American

12th April 2016

By Ryan Cristian

As the American people begin to closely examine the shroud that has been pulled over their eyes – seeing the veneer of misinformation that has been cast over the country’s exponential and perpetual profiteering and war-mongering – the people slowly awaken to the prospect that, in its simplest terms, they have been lied to.

The Choice to Follow Their Lead

This country is in the midst of a massive awakening, and the average person is being confronted with a choice: address the looming dark realization that their reality is not what it seems, or double down on the comforting lie and brace for the consequences. With the level of information being thrown at the public in today’s battle for the American mind, it is no wonder many have chosen the latter. It is a far easier path to stick with what’s familiar, however sinister it might be.

The Microwave Drug: The Biological and Spiritual Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation

11th April 2016

By Benjamin Nowland

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

The 1998 US Army document ‘Bioeffects of Selected Nonlethal Weapons’ says “investigators are even beginning to describe similarities between microwave irradiation and drugs regarding their effects on biological systems. For example, some suggest that power density and specific absorption rate (SAR) of microwave irradiation may be thought of as analogous to the concentration of the injection solution and the dosage of a drug.” [1]

And, as the ‘volume’ or power density is turned up on microwave transmissions, with increased antenna towers, Wi-Fi, Wi-MAX, mobiles etc., we now receive a microwave dose often millions of times higher than what was studied 20 years ago.
