It would seem that sleep should come easily and naturally; it should be as elementary as breathing. But unfortunately, getting a good night’s sleep is a challenge for many of us. In fact, the inability to get a good restorative sleep has become such an epidemic that there are countless websites, books, sleep clinics, smartphone and tablet apps, OTC sleep aids, and of course pharmaceuticals, all designed to induce sleep, some naturally and some artificially.

A recent survey study revealed that as many as: “… 43% of Americans between the ages of 13 and 64 say they rarely or never get a good night’s sleep on weeknights. More than half (60%) say that they experience a sleep problem every night or almost every night (i.e., snoring, waking in the night, waking up too early, or feeling un-refreshed when they get up in the morning.)”

Even more alarming is that an estimated 70 million Americans are currently being ‘treated’ for sleep disorders with prescription pharmaceuticals.

Glutathione, The ‘Master’ Antioxidant

If there were such a thing as a nutrient that “does it all”, glutathione would have to be a top contender for the number one spot. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that prevents damage to important cellular components, repairs and protects the body from harmful toxins and other dangers we encounter in our polluted environment.

Briefly, Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide comprised of three amino acids, cysteine, glutamic acid (ionic salt from glutamate), and glycine. All three of these amino acids are considered to be non-essential, meaning our body synthesizes them.

So if the body produces its own glutathione, then why is it necessary to consume foods that support glutathione production? The simple answer: Oxidation.

Emotions and Truth: Our Human Experience

Emotions and Truth: Our Human Experience

By Dr. Michelle Kmiec

Emotions spontaneously arise each day despite our efforts to control them. They often surface without warning, whether we want them to or not. Fortunately, many of these emotions translate as pleasurable ones – feelings of joy, contentment and love. However, like it or not, there are times when less than desirable emotions come forth – anger, frustration or possibly fear. But experiencing these unpleasant emotions is not necessarily a bad thing.

Emotions play a major role in who we are as individuals and are the driving force behind how we interpret events we encounter. The question then becomes, is our reaction based on reality?

Serrapeptase: an Enzyme That Treats Inflammation, Arthritis, Scar Tissue and More

Serrapeptase: an Enzyme That Treats Inflammation, Arthritis, Scar Tissue and More

The use of enzymes therapeutically is not a new concept, and has been widely accepted for its healing properties in both traditional and modern medicine.

Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme, which means that it breaks down protein into smaller components (peptides and amino acids) that the body can re-use. It is derived from the digestive system of the silk worm, which regurgitates serrapeptase to break free from its cocoon.

Scientists in India first began to research the enzyme to see how it could be used therapeutically in the human body. From the start, they were astonished to realize that serrapeptase is a very powerful anti-fibrotic enzyme, with applications for the treatment of inflammation, arthritis, scar tissue and much more.

Although the Serrapeptase enzyme was discovered in silk worms, no silkworms are actually used in the manufacturing process of commercially available Serrapeptase supplements. The enzymes are extracted from Serratia bacteria, and grown in controlled environments without the use of a silkworm host.

Are Your Thoughts and Beliefs Really Yours?

Are Your Thoughts and Beliefs Really Yours?

By Dr. Michelle Kmiec

To explain the concept of molding your thoughts and beliefs to someone else’s idea of what is or isn’t, we must take a look at how our minds work when it comes to believing or not believing that something exists.

Many perceive the human mind is of finite boundaries. In other words, we must be able to see things in a tangible manner; in a way that the mind can perceive the information. (Of course our minds are not finite, but the Scientific Method has not evolved to take that into account; at least not yet). We do this by putting any gathered information in some sort of order, in boxes or a file cabinet if you like, so that we are able to understand the information that enters our senses. If we see something that doesn’t make sense, we can’t just allow it to be simply something that doesn’t make sense… we must make sense out of the non-sense.

How is this done? By using previously gathered information, which at all costs must be explainable, repeatable, and tangible in order to be considered “real”. Never mind that this method excludes a multitude of existing information. Kind of like how important evidence can be thrown out of a court of law due to improper procedures.

The Truth About Modern Cigarettes: What They Don’t Want You To Know

By Dr. Michelle Kmiec

Modern cigarettes contain a whopping 600 ingredients, which translates to over 4000 chemicals. In addition to the familiar toxic ingredients found in cigarettes like tar and nicotine, many people are surprised to learn that cigarettes contain many other highly toxic ingredients, such as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, DDT, butane, acetone, carbon monoxide, and even cadmium.

Did you know that The National Institute on Drug Abuse has estimated that in the United States alone, smoking is responsible for more than 400,000 deaths per year, and that by the year 2030 tobacco related deaths worldwide are projected to be approximately 10 million?

The REAL Truth Behind Sugar

The REAL Truth Behind Sugar

Is Sugar Falsely Getting A Bad Rap?

Sugar, as most people think of sugar, is actually a very different product than sugar in the raw. Many people wouldn’t even recognize raw sugar if they came across it in the wild. It looks a lot like bamboo, and like bamboo, it is actually considered a type of grass – called sugarcane. Our palates love the sweet taste of sugar, and physiologically this makes sense since our primary source of energy comes from glucose. Without energy, there is no survival. For that reason, natural sugarcane has been used for thousands of years as a natural source of energy by many cultures.

Were all these early cultures just naà¯ve as to the negative health effects of this giant sweet grass, and only now in modern times we have uncovered the dark secrets of this plant? Or is it possible that we are the ones who are naà¯ve?

Are Apricot Seeds Dangerous? Or Are They A Cure For Cancer?

Are Apricot Seeds Dangerous? Or Are They A Cure For Cancer?

By Dr. Michelle Kmiec

Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the potential for Vitamin B15 (DMG) and Vitamin B17 (Laetrile) for the treatment of cancer. While the debate continues, tens of thousands of people die every year from cancer (and other preventable diseases) countless others die from the “treatment” prescribed to them for their condition.

The undeniable fact is that the life expectancy in patients who undergo ‘conventional’ cancers treatments is far lower than it should be. And when all fails… when there are no more surgeries that can be done and chemo no longer “works”, one then becomes the recipient of possibly the worse sentence you could ever hear – “I believe it is time to get your life in order” – with not a mention of holistic treatments that they could try.

How Clean Is Your Drinking Water?

How Clean Is Your Drinking Water?

It isn’t a secret that clean water is vital for health, but just how clean is the water we drink?

Though we are told that tap water is safe to drink, there are many studies linking the chemicals found in tap water to various health conditions. So, to be on the safe side of health, what can we do to ensure that we are drinking the cleanest and safest water possible?

Let’s take a look at some popular options.

Bottled Water

Bottled water gained popularity in the mid 1980’s, and the demand for it has grown exponentially ever since — that is, until the wide spread controversy surrounding bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical building block of many plastic containers that is suspect of negatively effecting health.

Unleash Your Inner Power

Meditation is one of the best ways to relax, reduce anxiety, improve memory, and even increase compassion. Physiologically, these benefits are brought about by the changes in brainwave activity during meditation. There are five brain wave frequencies: Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta.

Though anecdotal, the positive effects of mediation have long been known by yoga practitioners, pray circles, and new age thought enthusiasts. But did you know that these claims have now been backed up by science and modern technology? MRI scans verify that changes in brain chemistry occur as a result of meditation. For example, anxiety and panic attacks have been linked with high beta waves, while alpha waves are associated with a more calm and relaxed state.

Studies Prove Effectiveness of Holistic Treatments for Teeth

Today we have toothbrushes that vibrate, circulate, or some combination of both, and of course there is the regular ol’ toothbrush that requires a little more hand and wrist action on our part. There are water picks, toothpicks, plaque scrapers, tongue brushes, dental floss and dental tape. There are numerous varieties of toothpaste and mouthwash, and even dental gum that you can chew between brushing sessions. And let’s not forget all of the different types of teeth whitening products!

As a means to prevent tooth decay, many dentists recommend a fluoride treatment twice per year. Fluoride is also added to many of these dental care products, as well as to most public water systems. However, in 2010 the CDC reported that dental fluorosis, a serious condition caused by too much fluoride, is on the increase in the United States.
