How To Naturally Treat Head Lice – with Coconut Oil!

By Audrey Lefebvre

Coconut oil, an essential in any natural health or beauty regimen, has a long list of applications ranging from a facial moisturizer to treating lice. Yes, you read that correctly — Coconut oil can be used in the treatment of head lice.

So how exactly does Coconut oil treat lice?

Coconut oil is fatty in nature (good fat that kills bacteria). This “fat” is what makes Coconut oil effective against lice at least 90% of the time without the use of any lice shampoos or harsh synthetic chemicals. How? Coconut oil literally suffocates the lice on the scalp. Its fatty content does not allow the lice to grasp hair. Even after washing your hair, Coconut oil persists on the hair shaft, making it a perfect continuous treatment to get rid of head lice.

Natural Body Care… In Your Kitchen

By Alex ‘Earthie Mama’ Du Toit

Most body care products that you buy from the store are full of harmful chemicals and toxins, and the products that are natural and organic that actually work I find to be expensive.

Thankfully I have found the perfect combination of inexpensive ingredients that will give you the cleanest teeth, hair and skin you could imagine, and you can find it all in your kitchen cupboard: Apple Cider Vinegar, Coconut Oil, Baking Soda, Himalayan Pink Salt, Hydrogen Peroxide, Honey, Sugar, and Soap (I recommend Dr. Bronner’s).

Coconut Oil should be a staple at home. It is so incredible for you with its anti-biotic, anti-inflammatory and anti viral properties. It can be used all over the body, for cooking, for oil pulling, deep hair conditioning, or even a tablespoon for constipation. Apple Cider Vinegar is another staple in the home. It can be used on the hair and skin but also, when ingested, helps to balance the body’s systems so less dis-ease results.

Study: USDA Dietary Guidelines on Fats are Wrong

By Brian Shilhavy

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine made waves through the mainstream media. In a stunning meta-analysis of the relationship between dietary fats and heart disease that included over 600,000 people, the researchers came to the following conclusion:

“Current evidence does not clearly support cardiovascular guidelines that encourage high consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and low consumption of total saturated fats.”

This conclusion flies in direct contrast to the USDA dietary guidelines, which recommend polyunsaturated fats (think corn and soybean oils) as healthy, and saturated fats as unhealthy (think animal fat and coconut oil) in terms of cardiovascular health.

Easy Home Recipe: Skin and Body Detox Cream

No matter how pure your diet and what vitamin supplements you may take, your body absorbs toxins that must be removed. Science is now clearly linking toxicity and disease in the same way that they understand the link between poor nutrition and disease, and health-conscious individuals are turning to natural detox systems for support.

In a recent article I explained how it is possible to bypass the digestive system and convey healing agents into the body through the lymphatic system and the bloodstream. By following the simple principles of a 5000-year-old Ayurveda tradition, you can support the natural health of your skin and remove toxins from your body by using transdermal detox creams.

You can even make your own at home!

The key ingredient of any transdermal detox cream is zeolite, nature’s most powerful detox agent. When reduced to the size of a red blood cell and applied to the skin through a conveyor oil, the fine micro particles of zeolite get absorbed through the skin, making their way through the vascular system and lymphatic system to organs, glands and cellular tissues. In the body, zeolite attracts toxins such as radiation, chemicals, heavy metals and free radicals into its structure and excretes them through natural bodily functions. Gradually the body becomes less toxic, which is conducive to immune system improvement and healthier natural repair functions.

Coconut Sugar: Enjoy the New Star Among Low Glycemic Sweeteners

17th May 2014

Coconut sugar emerges as an environmental and nutritional champion of low glycemic sweeteners. This is promising news for those concerned with health issues such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and gallstones.

Coconut nectar is produced by slicing the bud off the flowering part of the coconut and collecting the sap (nectar) into containers. Coconut sugar crystals are created by kettle boiling the sap or by using low-temperature vacuum evaporation. Amazingly, coconut palm trees can produce fruit and nectar for up to 70 years.

According to Bruce Fife, ND, Director of the Coconut Research Center and author of “Coconut Cures“:

Loving Your Skin – 10 Essential Natural Topical Treatments

By Varya Kapran

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

Today we will be addressing a topic that is very dear to my heart: skin health.

Having struggled for 10+ years with terrible acne and eczema (did I say terrible?!?), I feel very blessed now that I wake up with clearer skin as a result of my healing journey. As you can imagine, that difficult time was a never ending cycle of dermatologists, monthly antibiotics, hydrocortisone creams, holistic practitioners who were unable to help (it’s all about finding the right person), layers upon layers of conventional makeup, and poor self esteem. I felt like I was fighting a losing battle against my skin and my body.

Once I began to find the answers I was looking for, it was akin to self discovery, and I began to feel more confident and more in tune with myself. It has been a long journey getting here, but worth every effort. Nowadays, I honour and listen to my skin. It has so much to share with me about the health of my body overall, and if I take the time to pay attention and react accordingly, then I am rewarded with radiance and clarity.

I have a few articles coming up that will address the internal and lifestyle components of skin health, and another on chemical-free make-up. So keep an eye out for those. In the meantime, let’s start by touching on some of my favourite natural topical skin treatments.

Forget Fluoride! Make Your Own Toothpaste with These 3 Easy Recipes

By April McCarthy

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

Ingredients found in conventional toothpastes — including sodium fluoride, synthetic dyes derived from petroleum or coal tar, sodium hydroxide (also known as lye or caustic soda), sodium lauryl sulfate, titanium dioxide, artificial sweeteners, and triclosan — might make us think twice about the products we employ for the sake of our teeth.

Of course, we’re not actively swallowing the stuff, but the gums absorb it, and it’s unavoidable that a bit will slink down the gullet from time to time. And given that most of us brush our teeth over 700 times a year, there’s no shortage of opportunity to ingest ingredients better left in the lab. It’s time to get crafty and create your own toothpaste that will leave your breath minty clean.

The most controversial of all the ingredients is fluoride. Although fluoride has been proven to cause neurotoxicity, very little published research has elaborated on acute fluoride poisoning and neurotoxicity in adults and children.

5 Foods We Were Told Not To Consume, But Are Fantastic For Our Health

By Marco Torres

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

The list of government recommendations on healthy and unhealthy foods over the last several decades have been as reliable as trying to pick the right numbers on a lottery ticket.

There are numerous examples of foods we were told not to consume, but are now at the top of grocery lists thanks to a savvy public who are no longer fooled by irresponsible recommendations based on corporate greed. We have become more informed on the downfalls of short-sighted advice from old-school nutritionists, who really had very little understanding of nutrition at all.

Here are the top 5 things we now know are great for our health, but didn’t used to because of limited perspectives on food education.

Coconut Oil Found Effective In Treating Atopic Dermatitis (Dry, Itchy, Scaly Skin)

By Sayer Ji

Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

A promising new study published in the International Journal of Dermatology[i] has confirmed the natural healing properties of virgin coconut oil in treating atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin condition characterized by scaly and itchy rashes.

Researchers at the Department of Dermatology, Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Manila, Philippines compared the effects of topical virgin coconut oil (VCO) to mineral oil, a crude oil derivative, in a randomized, double-blinded clinical trial.

Patients with atopic dermatitis have inflamed skin with defects in the epidermal barrier function, primarily related to inflammation and dehydration, which leads them to use ostensibly soothing moisturizers. Most mass market skin care products, however, contain mineral oil and related petrochemical ingredients which not only may contribute to skin irritation, but more serious skin conditions such as skin cancer, as well as bodily accumulation of significant quantities within internal organs. This is why natural, food quality ingredients like coconut oil, which have been used in traditional cultures for thousands of years, hold great promise as a viable alternative, and are increasingly becoming the subject of modern scientific investigation.
