Do You Feel Guilty About Doing Things You Love?

Do you feel guilty about enjoying yourself and doing things you love? About putting yourself first? Do you spend a lot of your time doing things for others (who are actually capable of doing these things for themselves) and leaving no time to do things for yourself?

If you do, you are not alone! Unfortunately in our society, we have become conditioned, programmed even, into thinking it is wrong to spend time enjoying ourselves, doing what we love, putting ourselves first, and having fun. We have been conditioned into thinking that unless we are doing something practical that we don’t enjoy, that we find a struggle, that we don’t want to do, then we are not doing something worthwhile! We have been taught that to get anywhere in life we need to struggle, to work hard and if we are not struggling or working hard then we are wasting our time because we will never ‘get anywhere’.

Well where on Earth are we trying to get to, for goodness sake? Aren’t we simply trying to Be Happy???! Don’t we work hard at jobs we don’t enjoy simply to earn enough money to do things that will make us feel better because we are doing a job we don’t enjoy?

But does it actually cost money to do things that make us feel happy? Does it cost money to feel the sun on your face, to smell the scent of the flowers, to see a beautiful sunrise, to gaze at a beautiful view, to stroke your dog or your cat, to go for a walk? Does it? Don’t you think that maybe, as a society, we’ve got this all the wrong way round?

A friend of mine has taken up cycling to keep fit, but he admitted that he doesn’t really enjoy it and has to ‘make’ himself do it. When I questioned the point of this, he said, well because he didn’t enjoy it he was sure it must be doing him good! So I said:

“Why do it if you don’t enjoy it? Why not find something that you really enjoy doing. For years now I have made a conscious choice not to do things I don’t enjoy doing. So now I love everything that I do, including my work!”

… and he looked at me as though I have two heads and said rather disapprovingly:

“Don’t you ever consider doing something worthwhile instead of just enjoying yourself?!”

His tone of voice definitely sent the message that unless I was doing something I didn’t enjoy then it was obviously a total waste of time. However I took no notice because I know that is not true! In fact I know that the Absolute Truth is the opposite. Doing what you love not only brings you joy, but it brings you many many other things that give you joy, that make you happy and give you that wonderful feeling of well-being. Because we are magnets. We literally ARE a magnetic field. We therefore magnetically attract to us things that are on the same vibrational frequency as us.

Since every emotion has a different measurable energy frequency, if your general state of Being is one of happiness and feeling good, then you will automatically magnetically attract more things into your life that give you those feelings of happiness and well-being – without even trying. Yes without even trying. Because when you are trying you are more likely to be feeling fed up because you don’t have what you want, instead of happy. So rather than trying, just BE. Just DO what makes you feel good in that moment – read a book, drink coffee, sit in the sun… that’s all you have to DO… because in Doing something that makes you feel good you are effortlessly attracting to you more things that make you feel good.

But… I hear you say… what if I am doing a job I don’t like because I have no choice. I have to eat. The Truths in that sentence are that you are doing a job you don’t enjoy and that you need to eat. But you do have Choice. We have choice in every moment. About how we feel. If the job you are doing does not make you feel good then you can choose to think about something that makes you feel good. Use your imagination, and while you are Doing that job that you don’t enjoy Doing you can Be somewhere else in your imagination. Imagine how it feels to do things you love, to be places you love. You don’t need to physically BE there, it is the feeling that Being there gives you that is important.

So, DO what you Love without guilt. Make time for yourself in your day to do things (no matter how small) that give you a feeling of well-being – and others will thank you for it. Because when YOU feel good, you can’t help but spread happiness and joy and everyone around you feels it.

And not only that, you will bring in to your life everything that you have been trying to get, and more. There is no need to struggle to get anywhere, because you are already there. When you are doing things that make you feel good, you are honouring and appreciating your self, your real self, the person you were born to BE. You are Doing what you are here to DO – spreading joy and happiness across the planet, simply by Doing what you Love…

Now what can be simpler or better than that?

About the author

I’ve been single, married, divorced and widowed. I’ve been a teacher, a translator, worked in business and now have my own company… I’ve sailed the Atlantic Ocean and I have climbed Mount Everest. I know! It sounds crazy but it’s true. I said I’d done it and I have, pretty much literally DONE it! I’ve plumbed the depths and scaled the heights in every sense of those words.

And I absolutely know that it was listening to, trusting and following my intuition that got me to where I am today. It got me out of the dark tunnel I was in after my husband died, and not only led me to the summit of Mount Everest, but to many other magical experiences too, like sailing the Atlantic Ocean in a small boat. I was the first British woman to have accomplished both of those things, and only the fifth British woman to stand on the summit of the highest mountain on the planet.
