Connecting Life to Consciousness With Your Breath

By Paul Lenda

Staff Writer for Wake Up World

“Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts.” These are the words of Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh. I contemplated on these words and realized their profound nature. Breath really does connect us with our point of origin, as well as the Source of all that is.

With every inward breath, you bring your mind back to your body…shifting your awareness away from all the mental chatter. Let go of worry, concern, and anxiety. Breathe in the freedom of this moment, experiencing the moment with all your awareness. Connect this physical reality to a multidimensional reality using your breath.

There is a reason why the breath is the integral part of every meditation and yoga practice. Breath is life. It sustains our physicality, but it also nourishes our spirituality. With every ebb and every flow, as well as the moments in between, there is a different experience of consciousness. With the inward breath, we elevate the energy within us. At the crescendo of the inward breath, we reach the peak magnification of that energy.  With the outward breath, we release that energy, pulsing it into our beings. At the end of the exhalation, we reach inner peace and nirvana.

How to Elevate Your Conscious Mindfulness

Do you want to elevate your experience of mindfulness? You can do so by doing a simple exercise.

Before you go to bed, keep repeating to yourself that you want to remember whether you will wake up on an in-breath or an out-breath.

When you wake up, do your best to become aware of what part of the breathing process you had your first moment of conscious lucidity.

This will take a bit of practice, but it will be easier if you practice mindfulness before you go to sleep, as well as during sleep. This practice will connect your physical self to your inner being that transcends the limitations of the 3D reality.

Take this practice a step further and follow these steps:

  • Breathe
  • Smile
  • Welcome the dawn of a new day

Let every breath be a meditation. As the Dalai Lama said, “As you breathe in, cherish yourself. As you breathe out, cherish all beings.” This is just one way you can turn breathing into a meditation. Let your life be one where every moment is one where you are benefiting all sentient beings, including yourself. Let your life be an active meditation.

From an energy perspective, air is prana…energy which can sustain us. That is why breatharianism is a thing. While you should probably avoid not eating food to try to live off of prana alone (and that would miss the point of living in the densest state of Reality), you could give yourself more vitality and expand your consciousness with breathing exercises.

If you have ever done the Breath of Fire for a few minutes, holding your breath and squeezing your perineum at the end, you know just how powerful breath is. It can go through blockages like a hot knife through butter.

We often breath very shallow, which is why practicing long, deep breathing can be exceptionally helpful to get energy deep into our bodies where that may be blocks in the form of trapped emotions. Experiment with different kinds of breathing and notice the effects.

We should be grateful for every single breath we take. Think about how incredible of an opportunity we have to experience this incredible life. It is largely what we make it. We are in control of how we respond to it, no matter what happens. Every day is a new beginning, so take a deep breath and start again.
