The Conversations That Define Your Life: Mastering Effective Communication

Effective communication has been greatly underestimated. It holds the key to success in so many different aspects of life. Take, for instance, how effective communication is in escaping your comfort zone and paving the way to achieving fulfillment.

Life as a conversation

If you ever want to know who you really are, then look at the nature of the conversations you have in life. Whether it’s in the nature of how you talk to others or the chatter in your head, the conversations you have going on reflect who you are. They are about as exclusive as your fingerprints!

So, for personal effectiveness, it’s worth examining the nature of your conversations, reflecting on how you see things, how you interact with others… etc., because you can wave, shape, and mold them for fulfillment and effective communication.

Communication – Life as a conversation in your head

Two men walking down the street: Both men have a conversation in their heads about money. The first man is thinking about how he will make ends meet, having real issues/concerns about paying next month’s rent, and with insufficient funds, he also owes money to the bank as monthly dues… etc.

Then there’s the second man. He’s considering how to invest in stocks and shares, having received a sizable windfall. He’s estimating how much money he’ll need to spend on holiday, so don’t to leave him short after buying those stocks and shares.

By their own interpretation, the first man is having a terrible day while the other is enjoying life, but both men are doing the same thing, only walking down the street!

You see, the only difference between the two men is the different conversations in their heads, to the point that it determines the life they are experiencing.

Given this, will your internal conversation run you, or will you run it?

Will you allow the conversations in your head to run you?  Will you keep on generating negative internal conversations based on what you don’t like, heavy-handed judgment, expectations you had that didn’t happen, things you didn’t deserve or don’t have, endless anger rants, dooms-daying, naysaying, fear-mongering, or ‘could have should have if only’ regrets… etc…?

All of which are disempowering. Further, such negativity is a prerequisite for victimhood by your own making. Don’t be your worst enemy.

Or will you create empowering conversations in your head? Conversations in your head based on inspiring, nurturing, fulfilling, calling, contributing, moving forward in life, freedom-based self-expression…?

Remember the joy that life really is…? It’s a matter of choice.

Always remember, when it comes to living life as a conversation the choice is up to you.

Life as an external conversation – how you communicate with others

Whether it’s the chatter in your head or how you talk to others, the nature of the conversation is determined by several factors. The point to get here is that they’re all interpretive and choice-based.

When communicating with others, creating an empowering conversation is up to you.

Living life as an empowering conversation is not limited to but includes conversations for:

  • Opportunity – It’s well worth doing some introspection, asking yourself who I am as an opportunity, a resource, and someone who can help, contribute, solve problems for others, and share myself daily.
  • Background relatedness – The potential of this one is much underestimated. Many people fall out with partners, friends, or business relationships because they haven’t realized that what is missing is a conducive background relatedness. When interacting with others, always identify the nature of the background relatedness.
  • Engaging – Generating conversations based on enrolment, inspiring others to involve themselves with you and in your relationships or projects. Charisma is simply to be in the presence of someone with what you are engaging them with. Self-confidence is key.

Further, consider excitement versus enthusiasm: You can mimic excitement to engage others. It’s external and sometimes even superficial. Enthusiasm is different. It is internal and comes deeply from within. When you are enthusiastic with others, you may well be considered to be genuine, moving, and inspiring, and also, your enthusiasm can be infectious and engaging.

The differences between excitement and enthusiasm are well worth exploring in your conversations.

Declaration – A conversation for declaration means making a formal announcement, witness statement, proclamation, something that is avowed, what you stand for… i.e., the act of declaring…

For example, consider this an empowering declaration: “Declaration of Our Wakening.” from we-the-people.

Action – How many people do you know who spend so much of their time complaining and talking about problems with all the related morass instead of finding solutions and not taking action? Indeed, a conversation for action, such as for planning solutions, can be most empowering.

To summarize

Be it in your head or with others, through close introspection, you can see that the nature of the conversations you choose determines how life shows up for you.

The nature of your conversation, life’s internal or external talk, can mean the difference between victimhood using conversations based on negativity or becoming a victor through your forward-moving conversations in the area of effective communication.

Now, the choice is totally up to you!
