After 27 Years: No Deaths from Vitamins, 3 Million from Prescription Drugs

7th October 2011

By Anthony Gucciardi – Natural Society

Over the past 27 years — the complete timeframe that the data has been available — there have been 0 deaths as a result of vitamins and over 3 million deaths related to prescription drug use in the USA alone. In fact, going back 54 years there have only been 11 claims of vitamin-related death, all of which provided no substantial evidence to link vitamins to the cause of death. The news comes after a recent statistically analysis found that pharmaceutical drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the US.

In 2009, drugs exceeded the amount of traffic-related deaths, killing at least 37,485 people nationwide.

The findings go against the claims of mainstream medical ‘experts’ and mainstream media outlets who often push the idea that multivitamins are detrimental to your health, and that prescription drugs are the only science-backed option to improving your health. While essential nutrients like vitamin D are continually being shown to slash your risk of disease such as diabetes and cancer, prescription pharmaceuticals are continually being linked to such conditions. In fact, the top-selling therapeutic class pharmaceutical drug has been tied to the development of diabetes and even suicide, and whistleblowers are just now starting to speak out despite studies as far back as the 80s highlighting the risks.

Mainstream medical health officials were recently forced to speak out over the danger of antipsychotic drugs, which millions of children have been prescribed since 2009. U.S. pediatric health advisers blew the whistle over the fact that these pharmaceuticals can lead to diabetes and even suicide, the very thing they aim to prevent. What is even more troubling is that half of all Americans will be diagnosed with a mental condition during their lifetime thanks to lack of diagnosis guidelines currently set by the medical establishment, of which many cases will lead to the prescription of antipsychotics and other similar medications.

Covering up the side effects

In order to protect sales, the link between suicide and antipsychotic drugs was completely covered up by Eli Lilly & Co, the makers of Prozac. Despite research stretching as far back as the 1980s finding that Prozac actually leads to suicide, the company managed to hide the evidence until a Harvard psychiatrist leaked the information into the press. The psychiatrist, Martin Teicher, stated that the American people were being treated like guinea pigs in a massive pharmaceutical experiment.

Greedy and oftentimes prescription-happy doctors are handing out antipsychotic medication like candy to adults and young children alike. In 2008, antipsychotics became the top-selling therapeutic class prescription drug in the United States and grossing over $14 billion in sales.

Antipsychotic drugs are not the only dangerous pharmaceuticals. The average drug label contains 70 side effects, though many popular pharmaceuticals have been found to contain 100 to 125. Some drugs, prescribed by doctors to supposedly improve your health, come with over 525 negative reactions.

Ritalin, for example, has been linked to conditions including:

  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased body temperature
  • Increased alertness
  • Suppressed appetite

Perhaps the hundreds of negative side effects is part of the reason why the FDA announced last year that it is pulling more than 500 cold and allergy off the market due to health concerns. Prescription drugs kill more people than traffic accidents, and come with up to 525 negative side effects. Avoiding these drugs and utilizing high quality organic alternatives like whole food-based multivitamins and green superfoods will lead to a total health transformation without harsh side effects and an exponentially increased death risk.

There are proven scientific alternatives to the drug/chemo industry, namely the work done by Royal Rife and Georges Lakhovsky in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
They cured cancer and other diseases.
Their work was suppressed, one was tied up in litigation and the other was murdered.
But the truth is coming out!
If you have shares in drug companies or hospitals: SELL.

    • writingme

I spent my entire high school year in prayer, meditation, hypnosis, self-hypnosis, exercise junkie, positive thinking, you name it. It wasn’t until I started using mood-stabilizing drugs combined with the help of a good therapist that my life improved dramatically.

There are no absolutists, people. Some methods towards holistic health work for some, some don’t. Respect people’s choices. Statistics are malleable.

      • Yes, I completely agree. Some people do have a chemical imbalance that can’t be re-balanced even with natural supplements, good nutrition, and exercise. Not nearly as many as the pharmaceutical industry would like us all to believe.

A few years ago, I saw a TV ad for an anti-cholesterol med that claimed that “50 million men in the US over the age of 40 have high cholesterol.” Do the math on that; that’s ALL the men in the US over 40! If they all have high cholesterol, maybe it’s a natural condition and we’re setting the level too low – not a drug-sales opportunity gimmick.

I’m glad you are feeling better. Keep it up.

        • Fernando

Bringing the truth about the topic there’s nothing to do with respecting people’s choices, it just opening up their eyes for the biggest bamboozle that is in the pharmaceutical industry. WAKE UP! people are being killed by medication because our bodies weren’t made to handle it in such a huge scale and someone need to make millions. Besides, most of the diseases and “hormons inbalance” are caused by the chemicals present in the processed food. Do your home work about the kind of “stuff” the FDA approves in the food given to our children! THEY INFFECT YOU FIRST, THEN THEY FINISH YOU SLOWLY WITH MEDICATION!

        • Yes, I completely agree. Some people do have a chemical imbalance that can’t be re-balanced – Can you name one single master studie in the entire world which is proving this objectivly? If you havn’t done your research, I can allready tell you there isnt. After years of failed hypoteses, the mental health field had to leave the labratory and just assume this. And thanks to that simple error, now we have a world wide of drugs creating chemical unbalance which wasn’t there in the first place. One don’t have to have masters degree and clinical psycology to know this. Just type in ” objective tests, psychiatry ” in google. And you will see, there is non.

    • The truth is coming out 🙂 But in the mean time I peaced out of the US and moved to an Eco Village in Costa Rica and it’s been amazing! Come join me in paradise 🙂

there was another cure made for cancer after the 1930s, Dr Burzynski “?spelling” the FDA tried to have him locked up, but a lot of his patients took the stand. they told him hes welcome to use their labs and soon as he found the cure they told him that he cant use them for practice…. needless to say he did they found out, there is a movie on it… the only reason they didnt approve of him using his meds is because the money they make off of chemo/radiation and other meds would be cut by two thirds….its sad how its all about money they will put anything out if they think people will buy it!

  • I personally would like to see the pharm industry blown apart and the deals they have with government, doctors and schools to be exposed. I have seen more suicides from being on psych drugs than any other. Time for the secrets to be exposed! BIG TIME!!

After years of anti-depressant drugs I can say I’m feeling much better today OFF the drugs and on a regular routine of healthy eating, exercise, and mediation. When I first started the anti-depressant drug “treatment” I had suicidal thoughts that needed to be addressed. As I took the drugs the thoughts increased. The solution by docs was more drugs, different drugs, higher doses. But the suicidal thoughts continued to escalate until it was very apparent that it might well happen, and very soon. I was totally lost and saw no alternative. I read about someone with a similar story who explained how mediation saved her life. I thought this was “new age” nonsense, but after a “near-death” experience I was ready to try anything. My life changed within one month. I stopped all the drugs and never returned to my doc, despite all the “warnings” to not stop cold turkey. That was over 5 years ago and I’m a completely different person. I lost over 40 pounds, am active and through my meditation groups have found new friends who value life and are truly fantastic people. Get off the drugs. Please.

I WAS interested in your blog until I came across this page. Your statement is simply not correct. There have been many poisonings from fat-soluable vitamins, most notably iron. Here’s the evidence:

Don’t forget that Gary Null came very near to killing himself with his own Power Meal, which was accidentally formulated to 2,000 times the daily recommended allowance of vitamin D –

Heather’s counterpoint is important. These extreme claims, of vitamins or supplements being absolutely safe, harm the credibility of this very important Natural Health movement. I have known people whose lives were salvaged from disaster partly through antidepressants; and I have known more people whose lives were turned around for the better by taking herbs and living more naturally. The absolutist tone belongs to religious and political extremists…and is not applicable in a real World full of many ways to do things…as pointed out by the guy who tried lots of “alternative” methods to no avail, and then got relief through antideppressants.
I find some good information here, but the statistical quotes seem a bit slipshod, with poorly referenced sources; and should be presented as intensely felt opinion, rather than science.
Iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin D… No one should be saying these cannot hurt or kill you if carelessly used…even though they are all indeed a helluva lot safer than the fruits of what one might colorfully describe as BigPharma’s carcinogenic Trillion-Dollar poison tree.

      • To think, I was counfsed a minute ago.

    • Jan

Heather I know what you mean but the point is that sometimes people get adverse reactions from iron because they are not using or being given the correct form.If the iron is from the ground (metalic) the body cannot metabolize it. Iron needs to be plant based as do all the other minerals to work correctly in the body – that’s why we have to eat veggies and not rock or metal to stay healthy 🙂 When iron is supplemented it also has to be taken with Vit D to assist in the iron being used correctly by the body (I am stating that in a simple way) making the wrong choice – or accidental overdose when formulated wrongly cannot be counted in these statistics ….that’s not the result of taking the supplements but of stupidity / negligence on the part of the manufacturer These deaths from pharma drugs are when they are used ‘correctly’ and they still do harm.I believe also that when they know one drug has caused death – they bring the same drug out under a different name and go on killing – its really disgusting 🙁

  • Hi Heather,
    A) ANY reputable nutrition product company should have clear warning of Iron intake on labeling by young children. Ours have warning AND child proof caps on anything containing Iron.
    B) You can “overdose” on water … if given more than you can process you drown. Balance and moderation is key – not only in supplements, but also in life.

    • Smithy

You’re right, you can indeed “overdose” on water. You are also right about balance & moderation being key.

However, for some individuals pharmaceuticals, used properly & in moderation DO help them manage chronic conditions.

I know plenty of type 1 diabetics who eat healthy and take exceptional care of themselves, however, they still need insulin.

Alt med alone is not an answer, nor is modern med alone. We must use our heads and think critically about what is right for US as individuals.

    • Jess

you don’t drown. Your cells take on to much water and they burst. Some detox diets have caused brain damage because of this

  • Davey

Heather you seem like typical opinionated person when your response is derogatory and not relevant and this is pointed out you resort to finding any fault at all ie spelling!! Accept the fact that research is correct and your opinions are not.
You a doctor or involved in pharmaceutical industry perhaps?

    • Mark

Davey, do you really believe that the statement of ZERO deaths by vitamins is accurate? How could such an absolute statement be remotely accurate? I believe that this is all Heather and a few other nay-sayers are attempting to make.

  • Its been shown yet the masses ignore, that being overweight causes so many diseases which are preventable and curable by losing weight. Having excess weight in the head can cause depression for example. Healthy weight loss with all the nutrients one needs, is the sensible way to go. I went go a day without my vitamins and minerals. Diabetes 2 is a classic case. Yet doctors don’t ‘prescribe’ Weightloss. Not many anyway, just add another drug instead.

    • Smithy

Doctors DO prescribe weight loss. In my experience, as an individual with hypothyroidism, I was told for years to lose weight and I would feel better. However, it took 4 years for a doctor to do a simple blood test which discovered the root of my weight problem & other issues such as fatigue, etc.

Now, with treatment, I am no longer overweight and feel much better.

Just an example to show you that sometimes the tables ARE in fact turned.

  • Allen

Want to subscribe to this awesome info!

  • Heidi Novak

Yeah a side effect is not a side effect – it is actually a direct effect of taking a pharmaceutical. The effects of taking vitamins , minerals, and herbs are at worst nuetral – at best positive in more ways than one could have imagined!

  • Tim L

Why is this surprising or important? So what if vitamins havent caused deaths in the last 27 years. Vitamins are not comparable to prescription drugs in there therapeutic usefulness or their normal function. Vitamins are generally molecular components of your metabolism, often stuff you already synthesize on your own. On the other hand, prescription drugs act to alter the metabolism in order to treat symptoms. The evidence for vitamins treating disorders vs. prescription drugs, vaccines and the like is overwhelmingly in the favor of the latter, in regards to efficacy. For example, If I went to the hospital and a doctor found that I was at risk for an embolism he/she might put me on warfarin therapy. Ironically, warfarin reduces levels of VITAMIN K in order to lower clotting factors, thus reducing my risk of embolism. However, because I am now on warfarin, if I get into a crash and have a traumatic injury I am twice as likely to die from it, because I may not clot effectively. This is a considerable risk, but one that is a reasonable one for people to take, since the risk for embolism might be much higher. Even still, warfarin is known to have definite ranges of sensitivity and drug interactions in patients, which increases risk of side effects and un expected death as well. But, like with other drugs people usually choose warfarin therapy b/c it is usually the best option. Taking vitamins won’t help (vitamin K will actually hurt in this instance) and herbal treatments have comparably scant evidence for effectiveness in clot reduction. This is why prescription drugs can kill, but in many cases vitamins are no replacement. In regards to your health, It would be better to spend more time assessing risks and talking about treatment options with your doctor.

    • Smithy

      Very well said.

    • Noah Kurinsky

Correlation is not causation, and this is by no means a simple issue. This is the point I was hoping to make but I’m not sure I could have made it in a more direct and straight forward manner.

  • Jan

I try to balance prescription drugs with vitamins. I rely heavily on vitamins, but I do take synthroid. If only I had known years ago about the natural treatment that some doctors prescribe for an under-active thyroid. I believe the pharmaceutical companies are greedy and overrated, but we need to work with our physicians to find a balance. One example of their greed is the lowering of the cholesterol number, which brought in a lot of money. I lowered my cholesterol with fish oil and ToCoQ10. My doctor said whatever you are doing, keep it up. For occasional depression I increase my magnesium and selenium being careful not to overdose. It works for mild depression. Where the medical field fails is in prevention by recommending a good diet and supplements. While we were in the south for two months with one month to go, my husband’s heart went in A Fibs. He would not come home and the emergency doctor would not prescribe any meds to help. I started him on Fish Oil (molecular distilled), ToCoQ10, and Hawthorne to mention a few. Gradually his blood pressure came down and the fibs lessened. When we got home he went to his doctor and he was put on meds. I believe with time the natural supplements would have cured his condition.
My arthritis pain has gone away since I started taking fish oil and a combination of herbs in Zymflamend. And don’t forget the Pharmies copied some of the natural remedies to capture the profit that way.
I could go on and on about how vitamins and herbs have helped me stay healthy by lowering my cholesterol and blood pressure. I wish my husband would have continued on the natural treatment, but we get scared and the meds win over.
My children rely on antibiotics for viruses, etc, but they are continually sick with sinus infections. I do not go to the doctor if I have a virus, but fight it with natural remedies and I do get quite sick at times, but I have never had a sinus infection or pneumonia.
We must never forget the medical strides our medical community has made, but we need to remember, too, that we are in control of our bodies.
Big business in America is evil and the pharmaceutical industries are only interested in the bottom line. Don’t get me started on MSG, nitrates, and especially MGOs in our food.

    • Noah Kurinsky

NOTE: Antibiotics will not fight viruses, that was never their intended purposes. There are very few treatments for viruses aside from fluids and bedrest, as well as home treatment of symptoms.

Secondly, there is no evidence that the random herbal treatment you gave your husband treated his condition. His v-fibs likely would have lessend temporarily on their own and recurred, had the doctor seen improvement they might not have prescribed prescription drugs

  • Jambo

SUICIDE AND PROZAC My husband who had Alzheimer’s committed suicide after being placed on Prozac. After his death, I was took a low dose of Prozac, but found my depression deepened. I worked my way off and felt much better. I’ll never know for sure if the Prozac caused my husband to commit suicide or if his despair with ALZ caused him to do so, but while I was on it after the initial feel good wore off, I began to feel angry. Once I kicked my dog, which I never do. That is when I knew something was different and went off the Prozac.
Vitamins, especially minerals, and herbs will help alleviate depression and should be used first before any antidepressant. Our diets are also a cause for depression.

  • Gerald Grow

Of course there have been deaths from vitamins — from vitamin overdose, and mainly among children.

There have not been many, but claiming there have been none weakens a good argument.

    • Jan

      thats actually not correct 🙂

  • James A. Duke

Figures like this remind me that I am conservative when I say that pharmaceuticals takens as prescribed in hospitals kill at least 1000 times more Americans than herbs and supplements, Whare are BIG PHARMA and the FDA taking us. jim duke

  • Some of these comments miss the point. Many, if not most, modern pharmaceuticals when used in the prescribed doses cause liver and other organ damage – not only when they are misused, overdosed, or accidentally taken. Most pharmaceuticals, even such commonly used over the counter meds such as acetaminophen. will cause harm – when used in the dosage stated on the label. Why do you think your doctor has you come back in every 3 months for liver tests? To see if you are improving, sure – but mostly to make sure your liver isn’t damaged and or failing. That’s the point. And while we are all too often warned about the “dangers” of vitamins, few read the tiny print on the prescription insert with the dangers of pharma drugs. If you knew what most pharma drugs could do to you, you wouldn’t take them. Listen closely to the next drug commercial you see on TV. They have to say the bad stuff near the end, very quickly. You’ll be shocked.

And I doubt anyone is trying to get people with type 1 diabetes to stop taking their insulin, or those with serious mental illnesses to stop taking those meds as well. It’s “prozac nation” that is worrisome, especially with children; any kid who’s troublesome gets medicated with something. How does that make any sense?

    • Karen M

While I absolutely do not agree with how the Pharmaceutical Companies and FDA run their market making comments about using properly doesed prescriptions hurting your liver is a prime example of an argument that does not work for the subject.
including VITAMINS .. the work your liver puts in to process vitamins is the same as it does for prescription meds.
There are certain scripts that are more likely to cause liver enzyme changes and their are certain vitamins that carry the same risk.

  • Great article. People do need to wake up!

  • geebo

Yes..but how many deaths would there be if there were no drugs and only vitamins and supplements were available???

  • Jeroen Buis

This is shocking, and not new, news.
Some people here talked about ‘respecting people’s choices’. Either for mainstream drugs or alternative medicine. I totally agree with that.

The problem is that the medical establishment, the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA (to name a few) do NOT respect people’s choices. Countless successful natural cures (for illnesses like cancer) have been discredited or forbidden.

    A few examples:

“I retired from working with patients for 2 reasons: One was the constant restrictions and attacks from the government, pharmaceutical companies, and the medical industry. Even in spite of having the opinion of leading experts and the highest cancer cure rate in the world! The second reason I retired was to be able to teach, research and educate, and to rid the world of cancer.”

Another one is Jim Humble who discovered MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution) and cured many of malaria, cancer and other diseases.
He is constantly harassed by the FDA.

If you live in the US (but also in Europe) and you think you live in a free country you are totally deluded. Try spreading and advocating successful alternative cures for serious illnesses such as cancer. Sooner rather than later you’ll be ridiculed, threatened, taken to court….

The medical industry knows that real cures are available (and under development) and it is not in their interest that they become popular.

    • drumtatsujin

MMS?! There is no evidence that it works, and has in fact killed people. There are no case studies or clinical trials, or any rational mode of action of MMS that treats or cures what it claims.

There are a lot of scammers out there that claim that their natural products actually have a therapeutic use, but does not have proven evidence or clinical trials that show that it is better than placebo.

Having a proper diet actually means that you don’t have to take in multivitamins, as long as you reach 100% of the RDA. You can go beyond the RDA and not feel any adverse reactions / side effects because the TD50 is high and has a wide therapeutic index.

People who take massive amounts of vitamins can get Vitamin poisoning or Hypervitaminosis.
Sounds fake? It’s real and it happens.

Don’t get me started on the hogwash that is spreading that vaccines are bad for people. Read an Immunology book and educate yourselves. Vaccines has saved millions of lives especially in developing / 3rd world countries.

Therapeutic drugs are given to already diseased patients to help improve outcomes, and make patients feel better. Of course there will be side effects, exacerbated by polypharmacy, which is usually required because most people in developed countries suffer from chronic diseases which is usually caused by sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary practices.

/sigh… Vitamins and natural healing methods are no end all cure all. They are great adjuncts to therapy, but there are therapeutic drugs that cannot be replaced by these products. If you can show me a herbal or vitamin alternative to an Antibiotic like Azithromycin, or any other macrolide that exists to prevent deaths from massive and resistant infections, please educate me. Show me published case studies, randomized controlled trials, NOT testimonials.

  • Justus

I’d rather put my money on people actually putting in the work to prove or disprove something, then those making bold claims without proof, those still citing publications disproven, or those still citing publications from 1930. It’s surprising how many quack sites still do that, try to look dignified and scientific, and just expect their readers not to check.

I really don’t like how the ‘respected investigative journalist’ lacks all journalistic integrity, and goes on to weasel in his own opinions and view at every opportunity. This is not journalism. This is a sales pitch, and it should be read as such.

Truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability. I see little of the objectivity, impartiality or public accountability here. Oh, and as for truthfulness and accuracy……..

The Toxic Exposure Surveillance System 2004 report reads 3 deaths as a direct result from vitamin supplements. Also, 48989 causes of vitamin poisoning. In children. Alone. 62562 in children and adults. Yeah. That was conveniently not mentioned. The record is publicly available, and that’s 2004 only. I’m too lazy to look them all up, but in a single years report, the errors in this article are pretty glaring.

Now, I’ll be the first to state, that going through that same document, the poisonings and deaths from prescription drugs are clearly a very large problem, and I do believe the medical establishment has a problem. One that needs addressing. But spouting one sided nonsense is not the way about it. Reader beware, and realize that the truth is usually a simple google search away.

PS: certain vitamin supplements are linked to increased mortality. Some things are more subtle then how many people died trying to swallow a whole bottle of supplements at once. You’re welcome to dismiss it on your personal believes, but if you claim this is just not true, then please cite a larger cohort or reasonable limitations to this study.
