NZ Food Bill Will Make Growing Food a Government Privilege Rather than a Human Right

12th December 2011

By Ethan A. Huff – Natural News

The God-given human right to freely cultivate food is under attack in New Zealand (NZ) as special interest groups and others are currently attempting to push a “food security” bill through the nation’s parliament that will strip individuals of their right to grow food, save seeds, and even share the fruits of their labor with friends and family members.

In accordance with the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Codex Alimentarius scheme for global food control, the NZ Food Bill, if passed, will essentially transfer primary control of food from individuals to corporations under the guise of food safety. And unless massive public outcry and awakened consciences within the NZ government are able to put a stop to it, the bill could become law very soon.

According to NZ Food Security, a group working to protect the food freedom of New Zealanders, the bill will turn growing and sharing food into a government-granted privilege rather than a human right. It will also make it illegal to distribute any type of food based on the bill’s language. This includes seeds, nutrients, natural medicines, minerals, and even water — without expressed government permission.

You see, agribusiness giants like Monsanto want full control of the food supply, which means putting an end to small-scale agriculture systems that operate “off the grid,” so to speak. This is why they have worked so hard in places like the US to convert conventional, staple crop systems to genetically-modified (GM) ones that are continually reliant upon new seeds and chemical interventions.

As far as enforcement, the NZ bill also authorizes private companies to deploy “Food Safety Officers” that can raid private property without warrant. Not only will these “Food Safety Officers” be permitted to draw weapons against those they are pursuing, but they will also be immune from criminal and civil prosecution for their illegal actions.

You can read a full summary of what the NZ Food Bill entails here:…

What all this means, of course, is that the NZ government may soon be able to arbitrarily decide at any time to restrict individual freedom to plant vegetable gardens and share the produce with their neighbors, for instance. Even “cottage industries,” which include at-home food artisans, could be restricted under the new law.

How scary Worst horror story . What kind of world are we leaving our children? Monsanto is so powerful and has so much money that bought Obamas signing the petition. What happened to his wife Organic Garden of The White House????? He lost all my love and respect..

This is why the 2nd amendment should never be taken away from Americans, because legislation like this will certainly be the undoing of humanity and those creating it know full well the only way they might implement it is if the people are unarmed. Look forward to seeing a successful impeachment of the author of the bill at the very least, and perhaps some jail time for even suggesting it.

Yes, people do need to wake up. This corrupt administration that the American people are living under us trying to wipe out all of rights and personal freedoms. This food thing is serious. You will not be able to share your homegrown fruits vegetables and eggs and what ever it is you grow it raise with your friends family or neighbors. This is no conspiracy and this Monsanto company is an evil corrupt arm of the Obama administration. Watch the movie Food Inc. crazy stuff and it’s all true. Remember when you want one right taken from the people ie. the right to beat arms, that it doesn’t stop there. If they take one they will take all. I ask one question…how do you controll the masses? With food. And if they take your guns, how will you protect that which feeds you? So, I ask, is it a good thing to wipe out the 2nd amendment? I think not. A wise man once said “A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything away.” Tread carefully with these rights that we have all been afforded. Right…what about Michelle Obama and her garden? It’s the old saying “do as I say not as I do”. Remember socialism isn’t for the socialist it’s for the people.

Are you serious? I am from NZ and this has never happened and NEVER will. And commenters, how has this got anything to do with the US? Unlike most americans think, the world is not made up of one country, and is DEFINATELY not loved by the rest of the world. You sound as stupid as the occupy protesters. (You know, the ‘group’ of people that no nothing about politics or how the world works and have no idea how much they’d have to give up or how long it would take.)

    • undrgrndgirl

well, frank, YOU sound as stupid as the occupy movement you’ve undoubtedly seen on rupert murdoch moderated tee vee not the REAL one made up of the frustrated american blue collar/middle class worker, especially ones who are over 40 and losing their jobs AND what is left of the tattered social safety net…i usually look up to aotearoa have for most of my life…but maybe not so much today…

    • Adrian

Frank, are you serious, I to live in NZ and yes this is happening, do you not watch the news, read the papers or surf the web? And yes, if we all as a country don’t stop this all these measures will be taking place, I suggest you read the new food safety bill, it is available on line to do so.

  • I read the bill and I saw nothing in it that would suggest that it implements a corporate police agency, nor that it prevents ordinary people from gardening.

In fact, it exempts people and some organizations from the regulations, which by the way, is aimed at the food business.

@Frank – just because we not from NZ, doesn’t mean this isn’t important to us in the States, as something like this (if it was as presented) would eventually affect us here, and in other parts of the world as governments adopted this “idea”. We all need to have each others’ backs, no matter what part of the world we live in. I know the US likes to flex it’s muscle, but understand that most Americans don’t agree w/ what our gov’t does (Congress has a 9% approval rating) and that’s what Occupy is about.

Indeed if this happens any ware, it is scary. But I am not surprised as there is a trend to commodify all natural resources such as air, water, natural resources, land……to “invent” new ways to make money for a few. But this infringes badly our communal and individual rights.

Moreover, this would be dramatic now that climate change and peak oil require at the contrary a move away from agribusiness to an ecological agriculture that depends less on fossil fuel, produces less green house gases, is sustainable, brings people back to the reality and renders them more resilient.

All this seems common sense for grounded people but they are generally not the ones who decide. That needs to be changed for the sake of all and Nature.

The best way to control Monsanto is to STOP buying anything they sell.
