As we previously reported here on Wake Up World, current radio frequency radiation safety limits in the US are based on old, outdated science. At the time these limits were set, it was believed that radio frequency radiation (RFR) was safe if tissues were not heated, with no damage occurring in unheated tissues.
However, a new study just published by the National Toxicology Program is explicit that cell phone radiation is associated with DNA damage, even at levels which do not involve any tissue heating [1]. As a result, the NTP is set to undertake further research into the potential radiation dangers from 5G.

The study, recently published in the Journal Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis involved exposing rats and mice to controlled levels of RFR at frequencies which are currently in use in 2G and 3G technology. The animals were exposed to the radiation intermittently for a total of just over 9 hours per 24-hour period, for between 14 and 19 weeks [1].
The NTP uses four categories of evidence to decide whether or not a substance may cause cancer:
- Clear evidence – the highest level of evidence
- Some evidence
- Equivocal evidence
- No evidence
This study’s results showed that at 900 MHz, there was clear evidence of malignant heart tumours in male rats, and some evidence of malignant brain tumours in male rats. Additionally, there was some evidence of malignant, benign or complex tumours in the adrenal glands of male rats [2].
A further body of evidence, classed as equivocal concerned female rats at 900 MHz and both male and female rodents at 1900 MHz. [2]
The report concludes that “these results suggest that exposure to RFR is associated with an increase in DNA damage”. [2]
Where Does This Study Lead with Regard to 5G Radiation?
During the 5G rollout process, 5G will continue to use the lower frequencies of 2G and 3G, which are known to penetrate up to four inches into the body [2]. With 5G being almost inescapable across the planet, this suggests a clear health risk.
5G will also use much higher frequency radiation, up to 60,000 MHz.
The NTP has announced that they will now work on further short-term studies in an effort to isolate the biomarkers of DNA damage from RFR [2]. By studying results across a matter of weeks and months, scientists hope to be able to isolate behavioural changes or molecular cell changes which could be predictive of cancer. This will help to establish quickly the full level of danger which 5G may pose, and the results, if significant, may underline the short-term damage these frequencies can do even with intermittent exposure, long before cancer can develop.
The NTP study was rigorous in ensuring that no tissue heating occurred, so it is clear that the currently outdated safety standards are not fit for purpose. “This study adds to the large body of ever-growing research showing that non-ionizing radiation that does not heat tissue can and does cause harm to humans”, said Anthony Miller MD, former Director of the Epidemiology Unit of the National Cancer Institute of Canada [3]. Devra Davis, President of the Environmental Health Trust agrees, stating that “It’s time for federal action to reduce exposure to the public.” [3]
As Ron Melnick, PhD, lead designer of the NTP study, says, “An important lesson that should be learned from this study is that we can no longer assume that any current or future wireless technology, including 5G, is safe without adequate testing.” [3]
