The Hidden Depths of Mindfulness Practice
Mindfulness, a practice rooted in ancient traditions, has gained immense popularity in recent years as a tool for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Yet, beneath its calming surface, mindfulness can lead to profound experiences that may surprise many practitioners. A new study from the University of Cambridge suggests that mindfulness training can induce altered states of consciousness, such as disembodiment and a sense of unity.

What Are Altered States of Consciousness?
Unity and Disembodiment: Beyond the Physical Self
The concept of altered states of consciousness might sound mysterious or even mystical, but it’s more accessible than one might think. In the context of mindfulness, these states often manifest as a deep sense of unity, where the boundaries between the self and the surrounding environment seem to dissolve. This can lead to a profound sense of interconnectedness with everything around you.
Disembodiment, another common experience, involves a sensation of floating or a dissolution of body boundaries. This state can enhance the feeling of unity, creating a powerful experience that transcends the usual perceptions of self and space.
The Cambridge Study: What Did the Researchers Find?
A Closer Look at the Data
From September 2015 to January 2016, researchers at the University of Cambridge conducted a randomized controlled trial to explore these phenomena. A year later, they followed up with participants, asking them to complete a questionnaire that assessed 11 dimensions of altered states, including spiritual experiences, blissful states, disembodiment, and unity.
The findings were striking. Participants who had undergone mindfulness training were twice as likely to report experiences of unity and disembodiment compared to those in the control group. Specifically, 43% of those who practiced mindfulness reported unity experiences during meditation, while 47% experienced blissful states. Even more intriguing, the more time participants spent practicing mindfulness, the more likely they were to experience these altered states.
Dr. Julieta Galante, the lead researcher, explained, “Our results at least suggest the possibility that mindfulness training causes these experiences of unity and disembodiment. It aligns with other studies showing that people who practice mindfulness training are more likely to describe experiencing a sense of relaxed self-boundaries and broadening their spatial awareness beyond the physical body.”
Navigating the Mindfulness Experience
The Importance of Awareness and Communication
While these altered states can be profoundly positive, they are not always pleasant. As Dr. Galante noted, “Some experiences, such as bliss, can feel extremely pleasant. But some, like disembodiment or altered sense of self, could be perceived as unpleasant or startling, especially if you’re not expecting them.”
This highlights the importance of being informed and open about potential experiences for mindfulness teachers and students. Practitioners should feel empowered to discuss their experiences with their teachers or healthcare providers, especially if they encounter discomfort or confusion.
Embracing the Full Spectrum of Mindfulness
Mindfulness offers a rich tapestry of experiences, from calm and clarity to profound altered states of consciousness. Understanding the potential for these experiences is crucial for both new and seasoned practitioners. By embracing the full spectrum of mindfulness, we can navigate our inner landscapes with greater awareness and compassion.
Practical Tips for Navigating Mindfulness and Altered States of Consciousness
1. Start with Guided Sessions
- If you’re new to mindfulness, consider starting with guided meditation sessions. A knowledgeable teacher can help you navigate your experiences and provide context for any altered states you might encounter.
2. Set Clear Intentions
- Before each session, set a clear intention for your practice. This can help ground you and provide a focus, whether it’s relaxation, self-awareness, or exploring deeper aspects of consciousness.
3. Create a Safe and Comfortable Space
- Ensure you’re in a comfortable and safe environment when practicing mindfulness. This can help you feel secure, making it easier to explore altered states without discomfort or anxiety.
4. Be Open to All Experiences
- Approach your practice with an open mind and heart. Whether you experience bliss, unity, disembodiment, or something else entirely, remember that these are natural aspects of the journey.
5. Communicate with Your Teacher or Support Network
- Don’t hesitate to share your experiences with a mindfulness teacher or a trusted friend. Discussing your journey can provide valuable insights and support, especially if you encounter unexpected or challenging experiences.
6. Integrate Your Experiences
- After your meditation, take some time to reflect on what you experienced. Journaling can be a helpful tool to process and integrate these experiences into your daily life.
7. Pace Yourself
- Mindfulness is a journey, not a race. Pace yourself and allow your practice to unfold naturally. If you encounter intense experiences, give yourself time to rest and integrate them.
By incorporating these practical tips into your mindfulness practice, you can explore altered states of consciousness with confidence and ease. Remember, the journey is unique for everyone, so be gentle with yourself and enjoy the process.
